Abstract
Osteoporosis associated with pregnancy is a rare disorder characterized by fragility fractures and low bone mineral density (BMD) during or shortly after pregnancy. Although the etiology and pathogenesis of pregnancy associated osteoporosis is unclear, excessive bone resorption, low calcium intake and vitamin D insufficiency could contribute to fracture risk. We experienced a case of a previously healthy 34-year-old woman who suffered low back pain 2 months after delivery. No secondary causes of osteoporosis, based on physical examination and laboratory tests, were found. Radiologic examination showed multiple compression fractures on her lumbar vertebrae. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) showed a BMD of L1 to L4 spine of 0.782 g/cm2 (Z-score: -1.9). We report a rare case of a lactating 34-year-old woman who developed multiple vertebral fractures after delivery. [Korean Journal of Bone Metabolism, 14(2): 155-160, 2007]
